The Board of Directors has established Advisory structures or committees to advise it on pertinent issues of relevance to Higher Education. These structures are referred to as Strategy Groups and are each chaired by a member of the Board. In broad terms, the Strategy Groups are set up to:

• advise the Board of Directors on overall strategic directions pertaining to a specific portfolio
• advise the Board of Directors on positions to be taken on specific issues of relevance to Higher Education
• undertake any other tasks requested of it by the Board of Directors.

The Strategy Groups of the Board are the following:

• Funding Strategy Group (FSG)
• Research and Innovation Strategy Group (RISG)
• Transformation Strategy Group (TSG)

The Strategy Groups report to the Board of Directors. The current chairpersons are:

• FSG, Dr Saleem Badat
• RISG, Professor Loyiso Nongxa and Professor Thandwa Mthembu (Co-Chairpersons)
• TSG, Professor Derrick Swartz
